The Mystery of Old Jack
Description
This is a Free Point of Interest. No camping or overnight parking allowed.
On a cold and misty October night the regular Adelaide train, carrying workers, was approaching Burra. Straining to see through the fog, the driver saw old Jack, a somewhat aloof and frankly strange local character, standing on the tracks. The driver frantically tried to brake - the wheels locked and screeched and the train ground to a halt. But not before the driver saw Jack struck hard and thrown to one side.
Distressed, the driver jumped down and ran to help - but he could not find anything.
He turned as a vice spoke behind him. And there was Jack. Uninjured. Jack looked him in the eye and just said Sleep well this night as it will be your last. The driver blinked, and when he opened them again Jack had completely disappeared. Never to be seen again.
The following morning people approached the stopped train. The driver and all passengers were dead - not a mark was found on any of them. The line was closed and never to be re-opened.
It is said that in Burra on one night in every October you can hear the distant rattle and rumble of a train - some people say they hear a voice too. But when they look there is no one there. The locals believe that what they are hearing is the legendary Ghost Train of Burra and the mysterious Jack.
